I always enjoy a good instrumental album, especially one that is guitar heavy. This album has an epic feel to it that can rarely be accomplished with traditional songwriting. Each track evokes such a different and specific mental image for me. It truly was a roller coaster of a listening experience.

#186 – Rubberneck by Toadies
This morning I had an easier time getting up than I can remember in several years. I felt lighter, stronger and more energized than I was yesterday morning and I have to say, it was quite enjoyable. It’s as if half of the nation is coming out of a prolonged depressive state, with the otherContinue reading “#186 – Rubberneck by Toadies”
#185 – Strange to Explain by Woods
Today was a great day for America. It feels like a weight has been lifted and that there is a light at the end of the extremely dark and embarrassing tunnel that we have been in for the last four years. It’s going to take many years to undo the damage that this administration hasContinue reading “#185 – Strange to Explain by Woods”
#182 – Casualties of Cool by Devin Townsend and Ché Aimee Dorval
This is a really beautiful album. At various times heavy, ethereal, epic, cinematic and delicate. It really is a masterpiece of versatility, and exactly the kind of discovery I needed on this bizarre day in history. As the entire world watches a few random areas in America, nothing is quite as helpful as the temporaryContinue reading “#182 – Casualties of Cool by Devin Townsend and Ché Aimee Dorval”
#177 – Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants
This album seemed appropriate for 2020, as a refusal by a part of America to listen to accepted science is allowing Covid-19 to run rampant through the country. It is extra frustrating to hear people spewing their ignorant, conspiracy theory-laden opinions to anyone who will listen, however the acceptance of these ideas is often mind-blowing. Continue reading “#177 – Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants”
#174 – Neu! 75 by NEU!
Sometimes you just have to get away from it all with some nice krautrock. Neu! was an offshoot of Kraftwerk and pioneered the “motoric” drum beat that characterizes much of the krautrock scene. Their influence on later electronic music is on full display, in this, their third studio album.
#173 – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
Even though the main event is still a little over a week away, today may prove to be one of the most pivotal moments in American history. With the installation of Justice Barrett, the Supreme Court now includes three people – in case you missed it, the other two are Roberts and Kavanaugh – whoContinue reading “#173 – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel”
#172 – In Search of Space by Hawkwind
Hawkwind is another band who most have never heard of, but who were instrumental in the course of rock history. They are cited as influences of many bands of different genres, from psychedelic to punk. They also have an impressive list of former members, with over 40 and a wiki all their own. Apparently, theyContinue reading “#172 – In Search of Space by Hawkwind”
#166 – White Light/White Heat by The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground, responsible for a lot of musical experimentation, is also like a blueprint for generations of indie rockers. Especially in terms of drug usage. They’re a great example of a cult following developing in the years after they were active. The artists who came after them and the genres they inspired comprise someContinue reading “#166 – White Light/White Heat by The Velvet Underground”
#165 – Modern Vampires of the City by Vampire Weekend
Here is another band that I have been aware of for many years, but never really given a chance, for whatever reason. I have had many friends recommend them to me, but now, with the awesome responsibility that comes with blogging, this album has inevitably come up in my queue. Perhaps I am being lazyContinue reading “#165 – Modern Vampires of the City by Vampire Weekend”
