I wouldn’t call myself a newcomer to the jam scene necessarily, but my knowledge in that area has until recently been limited to a handful of prominent bands. It’s been fun discovering some of the up-and-comers and the new potential torch bearers of the next generation.

As some of you might already know, I like to find new music through the curated playlists on Spotify. Today’s selection came from a playlist called Ambient Tokyo, which I highly recommend.

The Taj Mahal album from a few days ago featured some fantastic guitar work by this man, who was a prolific session player in Los Angeles from the 70s through his tragic death in the 80s.

Here’s a really interesting LA-based duo that was recently recommended to me by some musician friends whose opinions I generally respect. And I suppose this supports that view of them.

I read a great article about this album and how it inspired Duane Allman to focus on playing slide. You can definitely hear the influence when you compare The Allman Brothers version of “Statesboro Blues” with the Taj Mahal version. You would think that I would be more excited about hitting milestones in this project, but I’m pretty much just shouting into the wind here. I think the best kind of celebration I can hope for is to get a bunch more good recommendations.

This album provided some good, mellow Monday morning vibes on a Labor Day that is also the birthday of my younger daughter, Margot. A fun, celebratory day for all!

Most of our birthday weekend crew did not want to do two nights of concerts in a row, so we split into factions for last night. Most went to the Meow Wolf exhibit, but a couple of us went to see Phish at the legendary Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, a favorite venue among the Phans.
