Back to back guys named Frank. Rookie mistake. Zappa has a fun, and massive, catalog to explore. He’s a guitar hero with a truly bizarre sense of humor both towards music and society in general. If you want a good YouTube rabbit hole, check out Frank’s appearances on the various late night shows of the ‘60s and ‘70s. He went on the Steve Allen Show in 1963 and performed a solo composition for the bicycle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF0PYQ8IOL4). Today’s album selection features all of the musical virtuosity that made Frank & company legends, plus a little old-time misogyny to boot. “Valley Girl” and “Teenage Prostitute” haven’t aged super well, their satirical intent notwithstanding. Still, it’s worth a listen if you can handle a lot of jazz fusion guitar noodling.
