Obviously, these guys are one of the biggest names in hip-hop and have been for some time. That just makes it all the more absurd that it took me until now to give them a listen.

I was on my way to a late night Walmart run when realized I still needed to pick an album. I had just been listening to Donna Missal and one of this artist’s songs came on.

Spotify has repeatedly turned me onto artists that I then become obsessed with and this seems to be in line to be the next on that list.

I was only familiar with Joe Russo’s work as drummer of what is probably the preeminent Grateful Dead cover band, which is Joe Russo’s Almost Dead or JRAD. Turns out he also writes bendy interesting music as well.

I saw this artist live last night at the Hollywood Palladium, one of my favorite venues. She has been touring in support of Chvrches, an excellent electro-pop band from Scotland, and her set blew me away. I used to be really into jazz fusion, but it’s been years since I really looked for new music in that genre. This is a fantastic album by a Brazilian modern jazz great.

After yesterday’s Caravan selection, Spotify pointed me towards this group from the same era. It’s just another reminder of how many unknown great artists from the past I still have to discover.

I had previously listened to another of Caravan’s albums, but this one, with its delightful title, just had to be explored. Great cover art, as well.
