I first became aware of West African guitarist Lionel Loueke when he was performing as a member of Herbie Hancock’s band. It was an amazing experience at a literally life-changing time for me. I had not intended to go out that night as it was the due date of my first child. As there was no movement on that front, when some friends called to tell me they decided to go last minute my wife thought I should go. It was also my second jazz show of the week, as I had dragged my more-than-9-months-pregnant wife out to see Bela Fleck and Chick Corea. It was probably my jazziest week ever and it ended with the birth of our daughter.
