Today is the first time that I have ever empathized with Donald Trump, and it took the death of his brother to get me there. Never mind the fact that he will try to use this personal loss as some kind of political get-out-of-jail-free card or that the White House will never acknowledge that Robert Trump died of Covid-19, which seems unlikely that it could be anything else. If it were anyone else’s brother, suspecting such things would seem tasteless and just generally fucked up, but with our president, there’s no chance in hell that he will act like a normal human being and resist using the situation to his own personal ends. Even as I write this, the cynicism that comes from being lied to by a person over and over again makes it hard to continue pitying the man for his loss, but I am not a sociopath, so I sort of do.
