#53 – KiCk i by Arca

It occurred to me today that, in my zeal to show support for the Black Lives Matter and police reform movements, I have completely forgotten that this month is Pride.  Sorry to my LGBTQ+ friends.  It was never my intention to overlook your community and this week’s selections will reflect that.  I grew up going to a Unitarian Universalist church in Massachusetts and was surrounded by people of all orientations throughout my childhood.  I’m not a religious person in any way, but I’ve always liked the principles of Unitarian Universalism as they focus more on acceptance and mutual respect for each other’s beliefs and general value as people.  It’s been a long time since I’ve attended a service of any faith that was not marital or funereal, but these principles have always played into how I try to interact with others.  There are plenty of people in the world who would look at the cover of this album with disgust or revulsion and, in doing so, would be robbing themselves of a delightful listening experience and the awareness of truly unique and interesting artist.  How could anyone hear about a song entitled “Rip the Slit” and not want to explore further?  Arca is a truly inspirational artist to me, having what seems to be a profound sense of self and the confidence to live an exceptional and notable life, not to mention being a very talented musician.  If we all knew ourselves that well, I can only imagine how much more enjoyable society as a whole would be for us all.
