#42 – United by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

I love albums from this era.  There’s something about the drums from recordings at this time that really makes the music so distinctive.  This one is also interesting to me because Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell were paired up by the producers of Motown Records.  They added vocal parts to some of each other’s songs to create a series of hits over three albums.  United, the first of these, had four singles that appeared on the Billboard charts.  Tragically, Tammi died of a brain tumor about six months after their third album, Easy, was released.  Apparently she had known about her tumor during the years when these albums were created, which gives them so much more meaning as her farewell.
