I love it when a contemporary artist is able to capture the feel of music production from a different era. Albums that were made completely analog just have a different sound from digitally produced work. I’m not saying one is right or better than the other, they’re just different, because they are made by differentContinue reading “#693 – Sun Structures by Temple”

#692 – Art Angels By Grimes
Grimes came up in conversation at work today, mostly because of her Elon Musk baby mama status, but that quickly led to looking up her bio on various platforms. She is quite the interesting character, who claims to have put our her final “earth album.” I can’t wait to find out what that means.
#691 – CRASH by Charli XCX
I worked on a live Charli XCX performance early on in Covid, and she struck me as a pretty impressive performer. I was able to see a cut of her soon-to-be-released video, which is really cool and entertaining, and it made me want to check out her latest album.
#690 – Музика радості в бідові часи by VovaZiLvova
This Ukrainian rapper was brought to my attention by a friend who is from the same town, Lviv. I have no idea what the title of this album means. I sure hope it’s nothing super racist. Good album, though.
#689 – The Prophets of the City by The Bogie Band
I only just became aware of this band due to the involvement of Joe Russo, bandleader of the band that I would consider the preeminent Grateful Dead cover band, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. He is always getting himself involved in interesting and fairly jammy projects, so I always have to give them a listen.
#688 – The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused
A colleague of mine has been recommending this album to me for a while and I finally remembered it at the right time. It is definitely one of the most unique punk albums I’ve ever heard. One song, “The Apollo Program Was A Hoax” is closer to an indie rock or folk song that’s punk.Continue reading “#688 – The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused”
#687 – Year of the Cat by Al Stewart
I have a few friends who regularly recommend the same general era of music. It’s so interesting to see the different periods that different people focus on. There truly is no accounting for taste. It gives me so much variety in the recommendations that I receive.
#686 – Fake It Flowers by beabadoobee
This artist popped up in an email about new album releases. Her pop-rock sound is a lot of fun, and just gets your toe tapping.
#685 – Redneck Shit by Wheeler Walker Jr.
This guy was a guest on a show I was working on, and he claimed that his new album was going to get him cancelled. Listening to this, his 2016 offering, I wouldn’t be at all surprised by that.
#684 – Back to Bedlam by James Blunt
Based on who this album was recommended by, I was expecting it to be a pretty sleepy, mostly acoustic affair. How wrong I was. It’s actually a lot more energetic and entertaining than I would’ve guessed.
