I used to hang out a lot in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, which has a large mural paying tribute to today’s artist. I know a coupe of his albums well, but not this one, for some reason. He is a legend of melancholy acoustic music and really seems to have lived – and died – in that emotional space. He also provided the soundtrack for some very memorable film moments, particularly the suicide attempt scene in The Royal Tenenbaums, which is quite fitting, considering how he chose to shuffle off this mortal coil.
