#309 – Dusk at Cubist Castle by The Olivia Tremor Control

This album sounds like it was produced in the middle 1960s and transported to 2004.  I’ve really been enjoying perusing the Elephant 6 Collective catalog, and I can definitely hear the influence of classic psychedelic pop throughout, but from the first notes of this one, you really feel like you could be listening to this on your dad’s record player, through a classic stereo receiver on some audiophile headphones.  Maybe you’re in a smoky basement, lying on a bean-bag chair surrounded by black light posters and lava lamps.  Your mom yells at you down the steps, “Are you down there?  Why are the lights off?  What’s that smell?!”  Is that evocative enough?
