#72 – Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division

I have always known of the cult status of Joy Division and the iconic art that adorns this album, but never really listened to them at all.  Ironically, I have seen New Order, the band formed by the surviving members of Joy Division after the death of Ian Curtis.  They played Coachella a couple of years ago and a coworker of mine insisted that we see their closing set on one of the tented stages.  I feel like Joy Division is the type of band that you discover when an obsessed friend plays them for you and I just never had that experience.  The story of Ian Curtis’ suicide is so tragic and interrupted their career so abruptly, that their cult status was cemented by the time of the release of their second album, Closer, only a couple months later. That status is certainly justified and I can see that I will be cycling through their limited catalog – and probably the New Order material, as well – for years to come.
