Mark Hollis was the frontman of the influential new wave band Talk Talk before starting a solo career in the 1990s. Interestingly, he originally set out to become a child psychologist, but left university to start a music career, which seems to have worked out for him.

#1010 – USERx by USERx, Matt Masson & Roswell
This album came to my attention on a certain subreddit that what discussing the lyrics of some of these songs and whether they are making reference to a certain type of psychedelic substance that provides the user with intense visual hallucinations over a short period of time. Is that vague enough? (Spoiler alert, it kindaContinue reading “#1010 – USERx by USERx, Matt Masson & Roswell”
#1009 – Lullaby for Liquid Pig by Lisa Gerimano
This artist was featured in the Spin magazine column Top 5 Albums I Can’t Live Without this week, which was penned by Radiohead drummer Philip Selway ahead of the release of his new solo album. Lisa was a contributer to his first solo album, Familial, and he wrote so effusively about her work as bothContinue reading “#1009 – Lullaby for Liquid Pig by Lisa Gerimano”
#1008 – The Future is Your Past by Brian Jonestown Massacre
I first learned of this band through the 2004 documentary Dig, which chronicled their relationship with The Dandy Warhols. Basically, the gist of us was that people (including, it seems, The Dandy Warhols themselves) felt that these guys were more talented songwriters, but their career was severely handicapped by the on and off stage anticsContinue reading “#1008 – The Future is Your Past by Brian Jonestown Massacre”
#1007 – SZNZ: Spring by Weezer
This is the first of four, season-themed albums that Weezer put out last year. This one was released on April 20, 2022 to coincide with the spring equinox. The concept seems a little gimmicky, but I’m going to reserve judgement until I hear the other three installments.
#1006 – The Ruminant Band by Fruit Bats
It’s a silly reason to pick an album, but I was watching an episode of the Australian kids’ cartoon show Bluey that was titled fruit bat today. Despite that, this is a really solid album.
#1005 – Quality Over Opinion by Louis Cole
This is a fantastic album by one half of the LA based duo KNOWER along with Genevieve Artadi. I don’t know what else to say about it except that I loved it and you should give it a listen. It’s got a little something for everyone.
#1004 – All is Wild All is Silent by Balmorhea
This Texas duo of Michael A Muller and Rob Lowe(not that one) founded Balmorhea in 2006, adding their own take on the post-rock instrumental genre. Whenever I’m having trouble picking an album, I look up Sigur Ros and see what comes up in the “fans also like” section. That method has yet to fail me.
#1003 – self-titled by Roxy Music
Roxy Music emerged in the 70’s, combining the different musical sensibilities of Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry. Though the original lineup was only together for two albums, they laid the groundwork for and inspired quite the array of artists, from glam rock to new wave.
#1002 – Scott 4 by Scott Walker
I’m a huge fan of Wes Anderson, most of whose films I’ve loved, not least because of the fantastic soundtracks and scores contributed by Mark Mothersbaugh. These eclectic collections are how I was introduced to all kinds of artists, like Scott Walker, whose song 30th Century Man was featured in The Life Aquatic.
