One of the regions that I keep going back to for new music is in various places in Africa. I’ve always had good luck finding cool stuff in the Afro Psych scene, which is not too much different from their western counterparts of the time when this was released (1973).

#962 – My Truth by Robyn
The Grouplove album that I listened to the other day came about because of their excellent cover of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own.” And after reading a bit about her catalog, I had to take a closer look at some of her material once I realized I really only knew that one song.
#961 – From The Bayou by Youngboy Never Broke Again & Birdman
Ever since I listened to a Lil’ Wayne album a few weeks ago, I’ve been working my way through a bunch of material from artists that he is associated with in some way. Birdman is the stage name of powerhouse producer and Cash Money Records CEO Bryan Williams who is an extremely influential figure inContinue reading “#961 – From The Bayou by Youngboy Never Broke Again & Birdman”
#960 – Summer Songs by Library Tapes
Every so often I wait until late in the day to listen to an album. I prefer to get it out of the way early in the day to get a feeling of accomplishment coming out of my mornings, but it doesn’t always work out that way. When that happens, the selection will be moreContinue reading “#960 – Summer Songs by Library Tapes”
#959 – Spreading Rumors by Grouplove
This band came to my attention because of their fantastic cover of Robyn’s “Dancing on my Own,” which is one of my favorite pop songs. Obviously, that song is not indicative of the rest of Grouplove’s catalog, but it’s the one that brought them to me.
#958 – self-titled by A Winged Victory For the Sullen
When I’m looking for an artist with a specific mood, I always go to Spotify to help me make a connection. If you’ve been reading this blog (ha), you could probably guess that my go-to is to look up Sigur Ros and see what is similar, but new to me. And so, here we haveContinue reading “#958 – self-titled by A Winged Victory For the Sullen”
#957 – HEROES & VILLAINS by Metro Boomin
My favorite way to discover an artist is through an unsolicited recommendation by a friend whose musical tastes I know and trust. This is a great album that features an incredibly impressive selection of featured guest performers. If you wanted to have a festival that only included artists that could all be found on aContinue reading “#957 – HEROES & VILLAINS by Metro Boomin”
#956 – How To: Friend, Love, Freefall by Rainbow Kitten Surprise
If I’m being honest, I only listened to this band because of their name. My curiosity was definitely rewarded, because I liked what I heard.
#955 – self-titled by The Specials
One of this blog’s proudest traditions is to listen to an album by an artist that I learned about because of the death of one of their members. This one is a little more surprising because of the era that they came up in (the late 70s/early 80s), which is a period that I amContinue reading “#955 – self-titled by The Specials”
#954 – self-titled by Foxwarren
How many bands can you name that hail from Saskatchewan? Now I know one for sure, an indie outfit that takes its name from a small town in Manitoba. This has really turned into a Canadian geography lesson.
