Somebody sent me the song Tropical Hot Dog from this album and, besides the fact that it’s a great song, it made me realize how little of the Captain’s catalog I know. As a fan of many of the best weirdo bands (Primus and Ween are two of my favorites of any genre) I feel like I owe a debt of gratitude to Captain Beefheart for paving the way for great musicians and songwriters who write material that seems crazy to the general populace. The weirder the better, I say, especially when you combine it with all of the sarcasm and musical virtuosity that is on display throughout this album.
