#1149 – Roforofo Fight by Fela Kuti

This album appeared on a list from the Spin website about the best albums of 1972. Fela is one of the greatest African artist to truly take the world by storm. He pioneered the genre of Afrobeat, which became a key influence for musicians all over the world. He was basically the Bob Marley of Nigeria, with his music giving a voice to the downtrodden people of his homeland. His influence was so great that the ruling military junta of the time tried to silence him, attacking him and his supporters repeatedly, including an attack on his compound in 1977 by about 1000 soldiers that left him with a broken skull and saw his 82-year-old mother thrown from an upstairs window, causing injuries that would prove fatal. Imagine being subjected to such violence and not backing down. Truly a legendary artist whose reputation and lasting popularity are well-deserved, to put it lightly.
