It takes a lot of courage to be an LGBTQ+ artist in a majority Muslim country. Besides being the first artists to display a pride flag on stage in Lebanon, Mashrou’ Leila has also been temporarily banned from performing in Jordan. In 2019, they were scheduled to perform at the Lebanese Byblos Festival when pressure from right wing activists led to their cancellation by festival organizers. They were accused of blasphemy and promoting homosexuality and were briefly imprisoned. Their treatment led to other bands withdrawing from the festival in solidarity.
