Another weekend of big demonstrations across the country and there seems to be less aggression than in the previous weekend. There’s still no shortage of incidents of heavy-handed policing, but the demonstrations as a whole seem to have played host to fewer large conflagrations. The big moves that Minneapolis has pledged to could provide a blueprint for any number of other, perhaps smaller jurisdictions that seek to rein in their law enforcement situation. No one really knows how it will go for a city to start from scratch with their public safety strategy, but its great to see someone wanting to try. Of course, there are risks in any big overhaul like this, but the current system is definitely broken and the city at the center of the unrest has decided that whatever this change leads to will be better than what they currently have. I can’t say I disagree with them.
